3 Bad Business Habits to Quit

It’s a new year, which means it’s the perfect time to reflect and realign. 2019 was really good to me on the personal front, but my business life suffered the consequences of my lack of focus. I barely made content in 2019 or money for that matter, but my happiness is on a whole other level. Now that I’m in a groove as a wife, I’m ready to take 2020 by storm for my business. You have to set aside time to figure out what’s really important to you. Your focus may change from year to year and that is okay.

Not Planning

Not planning for your business is the most important habit to leave in 2019.

How many holidays did you miss sales on? How many content opportunities did you miss because you didn’t plan? I missed a lot. You should be planning out your merchandise, services, events, and promotions in advance to meet your sales goals.

Make it a habit to plan out your content using my content planning worksheets. Even if you primarily sell your products and services offline, you want to be active on social media and/or your business website to attract new customers and keep old customers engaged.

Over Planning

Over planning kills so many ideas. My best Instagram content comes from unplanned moments with my husband, just doing us. I have also found this to be true with my blog posts.

I can brainstorm content all day long, but if my heart isn’t ready to write then I won’t.

You cannot ‘plan’ magic but you can be intentional. For example, set aside time to brainstorm content weekly then separate time to write the content.

Don’t lose motivation brainstorming content if nothing comes from writing. Try talking out your ideas and recording yourself. Try speaking to a camera about your ideas then creating a YouTube channel. Try speaking into a mic and creating a podcast.

Give yourself room for the unexpected.

Not Researching

Researching the competition is so important in business. You don’t have to monitor their every move on social media but you do need to keep a pulse on industry trends.

I suggest subscribing to a few industry newsletters to help you stay on top of things. Invest in a conference or webinar to better your craft.

Also, read books and blogs that go in-details on your subject matter and something totally different.

While at Cannes, I learned that most CEOs and CMOs read books constantly. That fact alone inspired me to get from behind the screen. Do your business a favor and do the same.

Research your topic and become the expert that you wanted to hire 5 years ago. You got this.
